What Is Andar Bahar — and Why Do Pakistani Players Love It?
Andar Bahar — which literally translates as "Inside Outside" — is one of the oldest and most widely played card games in South Asia. Originally from Karnataka in India, the game spread quickly across the subcontinent and has been a staple of informal card sessions from Karachi's Defence Housing Society to the tea-and-cards culture of old Lahore for decades.
The mechanics are deliberately simple. A single card — called the joker or trump card — is placed face-up in the centre of the table. Players then bet on whether a card matching the joker's rank will appear on the Andar (left/inside) side or the Bahar (right/outside) side. Cards are dealt alternately to each side until a match is found — and that's it. The whole round typically wraps up in under a minute.
